The WiMAX Forum has finally certified the first four WiMAX devices, meanwhile the rest of the world has gone ahead without it. While the IEEE has been dragging it’s feet, companies like Motorola have developed their own high-speed wireless mesh network equipment, and mobile providers are going with EVDO. Motorola and Earthlink are teaming up to deploy mesh networks in five major cities to provide high-speed internet access, especially to low-income families and travellers. WiMAX may arrive just in time to find it’s niche filled by something else.
