The Onion Presents: Eco-friendly Options for the Iraq War
by: Sarah

The Onion is one of my favorite parody-based Internet news sites. Their stuff is outrageous and hilarious. This short is about President Bush trying to make the Iraq War more eco-friendly. The suggestions made are multiple countries carpooling to combat, making aircrafts out of balsa wood that will burn up if it is shot down, testicular squeezing instead of electrical testicular torture.

I totally agree, torture should never be wasteful. With the carpool, you’ll cut down on harmful emissions in our atmosphere. The balsa wood planes would burn up and create no waste. Even Leslie suggests, “clean coal-powered testicular electrocution,” but her colleague is one step ahead with wind-powered that will “deliver the same shock to the testies.”

Let’s “green” up the world.

In The Know: How Can We Make The War In Iraq More Eco-Friendly?

Ron Paul reacts to Benazir Bhutto’s death
by: Sarah

Presidential candidate Ron Paul voices his opinion about the death of Pakistan’s Benazir Bhutto.

Bhutto led Pakistan from 1988-1990 and 1993-96, but both times the sitting president dismissed her amid corruption allegations. She was the first female prime minister of any Islamic nation.

Ron Paul also goes on to talk about how he feels about the war,

“Here we are right now we’ve supported Turkey all these years and turkey now is using our weapons and our money to bomb North Iraq, this has to quit.  How long can we continue to do this?  It just doesn’t serve out interest at all.” Ron Paul puts his opinion plain and simple.  Listen to his views on aiding other countries, he has interesting points.  He does not agree with the whole they don’t obey, we bomb them idea.

Republican Ron Paul surprisingly raised $3.5 million in less than 24 hours.
by: Sarah

Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul, also a congressman of Texas, raised $3.5 million in 20 hours. He dedicated this Web-based fundraising in honor of Guy Fawkes, most of you recognize that name from V for Vendetta. The original Guy Fawkes “was a British mercenary who failed in his attempt to kill King James I on Nov. 5, 1605.”

Paul advocates limited government and low taxes like other Republicans, but he stands alone as the only GOP presidential candidate opposed to the Iraq war. He also has opposed Bush administration security measures that he says encroach on civil liberties.

Bill Maher’s live show brings interruptions.
by: Sarah

Two audience members were kicked out of the October 19th episode of Real Time with Bill Maher.

The audience started asking questions after one guy began shouting over the debate at hand.  Bill Maher got awfully heated about the debate the guy in the audience tried to bring up and physically kicked him out.

When Maher was interrupted the first time he says, “Hey, do we have some fucking security in this building or do I have to come over and kick this guys ass out of here.”  Soon after the origin of the heckling is kicked out a woman speaks up and Maher replies with, “I’ll kick your ass out of here too, get her the fuck out.”

Maher then admits that once you say you are live that all the ‘nut cases’ come out.

All in all, pretty funny video to check out.

160 arrested for anti-war protest
by: Sarah

Anti-War protestThe approximately 100,000 protesters gathered at the White House and marched to the Capitol. The protesters laid down on Capitol lawn to show their support for fallen soldiers.

The protesters carried signs saying “Support our troops. End this war” and “End the war now!” They also had signs asking for Bush’s impeachment.

The arrests did not start until some of the protesters jumped the waist high barricade on to Capitol steps. Most of the arrests were done in a civil manner, but the protesters did not enjoy when the police pushed them backward with large shields.
Better shields than big fire hoses, tasers and mace? Although a couple of people had a shower of chemical sprays.

Anniversary of September 11th
by: Sarah

USA Flag

The anniversary of September 11th brings us together as a country.  Although President Bush did not make an appearance with the others near the ground zero construction site.

President Bush is spending the day in Washington. He attended a private prayer service at St. John’s Episcopal Church and held a moment of silence on the South Lawn of the White House (CNN.com).

flight 93 flagThe ceremony for the 2,974 victims began at 9:45 a.m.  The list was recently updated to 2,974 from 2,973 when they added for the first time Felicia Dunn-Jones.  Felicia was an attorney who was working a block from the World Trade Center when the attacks took place.  She survived the fall of the towers, and for five months afterwards but died of lung disease that is blamed on the dust she inhaled.

The total number of victims killed at the World Trade Center site is 2,750. Forty were killed in Pennsylvania and 184 died at the Pentagon. Those numbers do not include the 19 hijackers (CNN.com).

The first responders and the firefighters who helped to rescue thousands on September 11th have became ill over time with respiratory problems and cancers.  This is blamed on the World Trade Center towers’ toxic dust.

Troops coming home summer 08.
by: Sarah

The Iraq War is always a big topic, but apparently, they are trying to pull out.

They have decided to bring home troops; any other decisions will be put off until mid-March.

The troops sent out to Baghdad in January, called “surge”, are to be coming home mid-summer 2008. With those four brigades coming home then there will be 130,000 troops still fighting.

Here is a graph to show how much the United States has spent on this war.

US troops in Iraq

This graph is how many troops we have had in Iraq over the past seven years.

Paying for the war on terror

These are all the fatalities broken down month by month in each year from 2003 to 2007.

Petraeus had said, “Military progress has been uneven, but the “surge” campaign launched in January is meeting its goals. And he said U.S. objectives in Iraq can still be met, “although doing so will be neither quick nor easy.”
