I’m a big fan of a really good steak and I feel bad that I lived in Kansas City for so long and never had one of the top 20 on the list. I have eaten at Jess and Jim’s in Martin, City MO but didn’t have the KC Playboy Strip, shame on me. I think I had fried chicken.
Last week in KC, I ate at The Savoy Grill (get the Ceaser Salad - amazing), always try and hit the Jack Stack and when possible I go to Arthur Bryant’s. Lots of good eats in KC.
I’m back in KC next week and might have to go have one at Jess & Jim’s. Being in Seattle I eat a ton of seafood, which I love but I do crave the fine steaks of KC on a regular basis.
Here is the one place in Kansas City that made the Esquire list of top 20:
Jess & Jim’s, Kansas City, Missouri
KC Playboy Strip
On the side: Twice-baked one-and-a-half-pound Idaho potato
For about the first five seconds after you click on Jess & Jim’s Web site, you hear the Pavlovian sound of a steak sizzling on a griddle. Close your eyes and imagine you’re hearing the KC Playboy Strip–a 25-oz sirloin–cooking. Next imagine eating it. If you are not within a one-hour drive of Jess & Jim’s when you perform this exercise . . . well, that’ll be unfortunate. 517 East 135th Street; 816-941-9499; jessandjims.com
