Russell Crowe talks about perfection before the NE Patriots lost the Super Bowl
by: Sarah

The almost perfect New England Patriots were almost perfect when they went up against the New York Giants. They made one false move, letting the Giants take the lead.

This advert with Russell Crowe narrating is a little over the top, kind of like they expected nothing else but an easy win. They were WRONG!

The New York Giants have pulled off one of the biggest upsets in National Football League history, defeating the heavily favored New England Patriots, 17-14, to win Super Bowl 42 and deny New England an undefeated season.

Update: Since I completely forgot to put this in earlier, what is Russell Crowe, from Australia, doing the voice over for an American Football advert.  Is it that his voice is just that damn good?  I mean, I can’t complain really, his voice carries the point well, and I don’t personally think that Chris Rock [no offense Mr. Rock lol] could have done a better job.  But any thoughts on this?

What music is that behind his voice?

  2. #2 POSTED BY AK, Feb 4th, 2008 5:23 pm

It’s “My Name is Lincoln” by Steve Jablonsky. It’s from “The Island” soundtrack.

Such a B.E.A.U.T.I.F.U.L. commercial. BEST one in decades c/o Superbowl. All the rest, including half time, sucked so bad. Advertisers & Investors alike, need to rechannel their creative minds, and stop using ’stupidity’ (like Will Ferrell & witty ad campaigns) to win their audiences’ attention. It’s boring. Super 3D CGI can only complete so much, but in the end, it’s about the quality, the words, and the product. So please, to all you advertisers out there, STOP BEING SO DAMN CHEAP & Selfish. Come up with a solid & meaningful pitch, please.

Brilliant! Makes me think of Olympiads - inspiring - dream big, dream large; win or lose - by whose definition…the effort alone is success! Carry-on!

  9. awesome clip, want to use it at a conference this week…anyway you can make it downloadable or full screen from your site?

I’m not a football fan, so this is, as you say Murph, over the top, but I like the ending. Anyone can relate to the ending.

But..the question remains? Can you be a perfect couch potato?

I was praying it wasn’t a commercial. And it wasn’t. Whew!

Thanks for sharing this..! It was great fun :-)

one of the best vids ever done, even better since new england lost, significant, inspiring, relavant, this was a near masterpiece, ISNT THAT WHAT PERFECTION IS?

I missed it on TV so thanks SO much for bringing it here! It’s beautiful and just the sort of inspiring encouragment Russell loves to share. Gotta love that man!

I could have issues with perfection, DaVinci, Pollock, a perfect season (until the super bowl) but overall I think this was a great bit of video for the NFL to have its name on. Not your typical class, not your typical VO from Russel Crowe…really well done visually and spoken.

Wonderful stuff NFL, do more of this and keep the pre-games show to 30 minutes not 4 hours.

Really great video. This needs to be seen by more people! How can we get this out on Youtube or somewhere where people will really see it? Can somone post it there? The message is so inspiring…VERY WELL DONE. Without question the best part of an amazing Superbowl.

  18. #18 POSTED BY CC, Feb 5th, 2008 3:01 am

It’s actually NOT about Patriots (nor Crowe on Football), but the “PURSUIT FOR PERFECTION”. If you caught the words, it included:

“No player, No coach, No team’s perfect. It is their attempt to achieve that ideal which has The New England Patriots, one step closer. And that’s what makes it perfect. That’s what makes it beautiful. That’s what inspires.”

Crowe simply delivers the message in his voice (which is almost an art form itself). Just a beautiful video.

Oh, and thanks so much for posting this! :)

Thanks for placing this clip. As an aussie, I felt Russell Crowes narration was excellent, pity the NRL (National Rugby League) in Australia couldn’t employ his talents. Maybe I will suggets it to them. I might put this to my kids grand final video from last year. A lot of passion and grunt in this one. Who ever decided to put sport, music and narration together certainly hit the nail on the head

While at a super bowl party all my friends were glued to this video and praised it as one of the best motivational videos ever…( we are all in sales) where can I get a down load of this ? Interesting how some of us get it about Perfection and Beauty and to become the best human being we can..If only more did get it, the world would be a better and safer place. It truly was beautiful!!!
    Thanks to Russell Crowe also.

  25. #25 POSTED BY Slade, Feb 5th, 2008 11:18 am

The advert doesn’t strike me as being for one team or the other, and it is very well done.

Crowe has a voice that works fantastic in voiceovers as long as he doesn’t allow the natural way of aussie diction turn it into a mumble. He’s very clear here.

Chris Rock? Absolutely not. He’s good, but it’s completely the wrong voice and won’t work with the visuals. The video needs gravel and gravitas.

  26. #26 POSTED BY Justin, Feb 5th, 2008 12:23 pm

Wow. Just. Wow! That was ridiculous! I mean, comparing the Super Bowl to Da Vinci, the Sistine Chapel, the Civil Rights movement? Are you f’ing kidding me?!

I’m amazed at how many of you all are cool with having smoke blown up your ass, so long as there’s some melodramatic music and a good narrator. I gotta say, Crowe did a good job, but my GOD was this was gay. The people behind this were actively trying to insult our intelligence. “Hey, this game is just dudes in tights and padding running a ball back and forth, but I bet if we show images of the Mona Lisa and put some Danny Elfman shit behind it, we can get every motivational speaker from here to Paducah just begging for it! Let’s make it happen!”

Ping pong is more popular than American football. Can you imagine Russell Crowe narrating over slow-motion shots of some Chinese guy in his little ping pong shorts doing a wicked backhand, sending this tiny ping pong ball screaming back at his opponent? Then fade to the Mona Lisa?

I really don’t consider myself that jaded or cynical, but Christ on a bike, people! Let’s have some perspective!

  27. #27 POSTED BY Justin, Feb 5th, 2008 12:27 pm

Oh, and I LOVED the “Beautiful Mind” reference. “Beautiful minds have been striving for perfection for millenia. But today, these Gladiators will take the field, Masters and Commanders of their sport, to do battle. Will it be Tom Brady and his Patriots, or the Cinderella Man, Eli Manning who wins the day? {ahem} 3:10toYuma!”

  28. #28 POSTED BY John, Feb 5th, 2008 1:42 pm

I found the Russel Crowe piece absolutely amazing. It gave me pause and chills amidst all of the bravado of the Supe Bowl hype. Is there anyone who knows how to get a high definition copy of this, I will buy it. A major portion of its impact were the visuals in combinaton with the narration. I want to include it as a intro for some of my courses. I know it will have an impact on my student. Thanks in advance, John C.

  31. #31 POSTED BY Anthony, Feb 5th, 2008 4:53 pm

Justin, I don’t believe there was any comparing going on. The whole video was about “perfection” in many different aspects. It never came right out and said that football was the equivalent of the Sistine Chapel, yet it is something that we as a people view as perfect. You’re looking wayyy to much in to this my man.

  32. #32 POSTED BY Rita, Feb 5th, 2008 5:11 pm

Re: Why would Russell do it? Well… he’s in LA. He was available. Probably has some friends at Fox that asked him to do it. He seems to be into doing narration work lately as he’s done some other stuff. And he’s into football (the Rugby League version, but the idea of a 19-0 season must have intrigued him as a team owner).

  33. #33 POSTED BY Sarah, Feb 5th, 2008 6:15 pm

Oh Rita, I don’t doubt all that, I just simply think it is funny that he an Australian was VOing an American game…
His voice is phenomenal and I personally cannot think of anyone better.

  34. #34 POSTED BY Toni, Feb 5th, 2008 6:59 pm

Russell Crowe’s voice is perfection. He’s also become a fan of American football through his friend, Lloyd Carr, former coach of the Michigan Wolverines. He is striving to do something great with his own rugby team.

Russell Crowe is a perfectionist himself, which is evident in everything he does.

    He was the perfect choice.

can someone tell me who that tennis player and astronaut is toward the end

  36. This commercial, in combination with the declaration of independence commercial, shows to what extent the Superbowl has become this nation’s modern equivalent of ancient Rome’s bread and circuses. The post by Justin is exactly right, if he’s looking too far into it, others are not looking far enough. Advertising works in subtleties and not always overt cause and effects. Comparing a pastime to transcendental, spiritual art is absurd, almost obscene. We can all feel good about ourselves and our country because we are gorging on junk food, drinking beer and watching football, all at the same time. This is not the time to remember that our president has restricted individual freedoms to historic lows, legalized torture, engaged and sustained what is essentially an illegal war. This is Superbowl time, a fake feel good fest for all. What I like best is that they essentially picked the ninja turtles for the art they selected: leonardo, raphael and michelangelo, donatello was probably too gay to include. Comparably you could look at fascist Italy’s invocation of their artistic heritage to support Mussolini’s regime. A lot can be said about this commercial, but inspiring, beautiful or any of the other superlative adjectives posters have used are incorrect. I would say this is: a nice piece of propaganda, over-the-top, tongue-in-cheek (with Crowe referencing his own movies), or ridiculous.

  37. #37 POSTED BY Big Guy, Feb 5th, 2008 9:59 pm

Geez some of you bashers need to get a life…. Who cares if it was an advertisement in the Super Bowl; it’s still a great piece. They didn’t mean it to be a revolutionary, historic work of art; they were simply making an inspirational short film that tied in with a big event like the Super Bowl and would be seen by a large audience. Yeah, there are plenty of problems in the world, but I guess we can’t enjoy a football game with our family and friends; instead we need to bash our president and our government or find something to protest and be mad and upset, and certainly not watch the Super Bowl, because it’s all a big ploy of corporate America to brainwash us and make us insensitive to the problems of the world. Ridiculous! Just enjoy the video for what it is…..

Great video by the way; Russell Crowe is the man!

  40. #40 POSTED BY DARE, Feb 6th, 2008 11:19 am

holy shit man, just a damn pre game promo. u guys need to go outside and throw a football once in a while. Pregame promos are done for any big sports event, nba finals, world series, superbowl. Since superbowl generates the highest amount of profit, viewers and sponsors they can afford russell crowe.

  41. So no one else thinks it is laughable that they equated the Superbowl with Martin Luther King and JFK? Did the Superbowl march for civil rights in Birmingham and get sprayed down by firehoses?

I don’t care that it’s an ad by the way, I find commercials extremely interesting, especially in this case. Oh and I couldn’t care less about Crowe’s narration either. I’m just suggesting an alternate reading of the imagery, perhaps one people are uncomfortable with. I mean this ad is pretty indefensible logically, most are. I really can’t believe people like this thing.

  42. #42 POSTED BY Justin F, Feb 6th, 2008 4:36 pm

video gave me chills…russell’s voice made this video..but i think chris rock’s voice would been kinda sweet..he would proly never actually gave team names though..instead of giants and patriots he prlly would of said this group of nigggas and this group of niggas..i think chris would of been more amusing..but this was maybe the greatest intro to a sporting event i’ve ever seen…rivaling the 1997 final round of the masters..you should youtube that one if you like intro’s to major sporting events.

  43. #43 POSTED BY BULLS ON FIRE, Feb 7th, 2008 3:39 am

FCOL. This commercial is about “NOBODY IS PERFECT”. Not even the NE Patriots! But for “WHATEVER IT IS THAT YOU DO, DO YOUR BEST!”
Give it up, Advocate, or whomever is still debating whether a stupid football game measures up to MLK or DaVinci etc. Damn. Face it, this is a pretty dumb country, and if it’s to get a sports team and a celebrity actor to catch a young viewer’s attention - SO BE IT. Have something better to offer us? Well then, SHOW US! Until then, Please - stop whining.

  44. Are you offering me a pregame Superbowl spot? Because that is one sweet deal. Though I do agree with your thoughts about what’s stupid

  45. #45 POSTED BY BULLS ON FIRE, Feb 8th, 2008 12:09 am

You don’t need a pregame Superbowl spot to show us what you’ve got. And believe me, you’re not the only one who agrees with me on what’s stupid today. But it takes an intelligent person to lead the way, not criticize.

    Peace, Brother.

  46. #46 POSTED BY THE MAN, Feb 9th, 2008 1:26 pm

Honestly, stop crying about the comparisons. It’s pretty sad if you actually think they are saying that the super bowl is equivalent to the civil rights movement. He’s saying there is really no definition to perfection, and is just giving examples of the past. I’m sorry if that offends you and your liberal mindset, considering you love to bash our government.

  47. #47 POSTED BY wabba mama, Feb 9th, 2008 5:38 pm

why is everybody trying to act so smart, its just a commercial that some people find amusing. if you guys are so smart then why dont you just change the world and make us understand why a good commercial should be like

  48. #48 POSTED BY sports, Feb 9th, 2008 6:57 pm

I actually worked on this feature and if any of you guys would like a copy of this on DVD, I can try and send some copies out. I would like to help you out Lara, I think that would be great if you showed it to your class. Comment on this board if you would like a real copy.

  50. #50 POSTED BY CC, Feb 10th, 2008 4:04 pm

Perfection. For everyone of us, it means something different. And that, is it’s beauty. The idea of what is perfection has been debated by the world’s most beautiful minds, since Aristotle first attempted to define it. Perfect, is which is complete. Which is so good. That nothing of the kind could be better. And perfect, is which has obtained it’s purpose. However, humans progress. Today’s most perfect violinist will someday be eclipsed by another. Another who would achieve musical bliss our minds simply can not get grasp.
Tonight, on the planet’s biggest stage, we may bear witness to perfection. No player, No coach, No team’s perfect. It is that attempt to achieve that ideal which has The New England Patriots, one step closer. And that’s what makes it perfect. That’s what makes it beautiful. That’s what inspires. The New York Giants, are the last obstacle in their journey. They too, have a dream of being the world’s best on this day, at this time, and for them, that’s perfect. And that’s the thing about football. It doesn’t matter what you’ve done before, it’s about what you do today. Being inspired by the Pursuit of Perfection- you will see today. Whatever it means to us. Whether it’s to being better at our own job, to be a better friend, to be a better parent. Because if they can strive for it, and in our own way, maybe we can too.

  51. #51 POSTED BY Anthony, Feb 12th, 2008 9:20 pm

PEOPLE! PEOPLE!….This video is attempt to explain the values of ABTAINING PERFECTION…And there are MANY THINGS you can pursue to be PERFECT…The Civil Rights movement, Sistine Chapel, JFK and freaking Jimi Hendrix all share different attributes of PERFECTION….And so ‘were’ the Patriots….

Don’t get so critical, geez it’s not a comparison

  52. #52 POSTED BY Frank, Mar 27th, 2008 9:21 am

To all of you who absolutly hate this commercial becuase it links inspirtational events in history that actually matter to the super bowl.. you are all completely correct. the reason for this is that you stupid north americans seem to have this overwhelming desire to have to own everything and have the misconception that you are the best at everything and actually matter. the reality is…. you dont! the world hates the U S. if you go to any country other than north america, the us is seen as the worlds biggest problem, and yet you sit there rolling in gluttony, thinking that somehow the game you are watching actually has some meaning in life and will somehow change the outcome of the world. Get real!! There are 6 billion people in the world and you cant think past yourself!! how many kids are starving, or dying from aids, but youd rather sit in from of your Tv watching some guys run around gorging yourself on chips pop and pizza only increasing the fat on your already obese bodies!
