Something so simple as the name of a teddy bear landed this English woman in Sudan’s jail.
Ms. Gibbons, 54, left her home in Liverpool to teach in Sudan in July. The school she was working for called itself a ‘British international school’ teaching kids ages 4 to 18.
She wanted her class of 7 year olds to learn animal habits by having a teddy bear in the room. When she asked for the kids to name it they decided Mohammed was a worthy name. Unknowingly she had done anything wrong according to Sudan’s laws, she continued as if the name were acceptable.
That could be seen as an insult to the Prophet Mohammed, the reports said.
Blasphemy is punishable with 40 lashes under Islamic Sharia law, Britain’s Press Association news agency reported.
The bear was named back in September and is just now causing an uproar with parents.
Mohammed also happens to be a common name, so it is understandable to see where this was just a simple mistake, not an attack on faith or religion.
Family and the British Embassy, worried for her safety, are trying to get this all sorted out as soon as possible.
