Steve Fossett, a well known adventurer, has gone missing after he took flight Monday morning at 9.
He and his plane took off alone in Nevada from his private ranch with four to five hours of fuel. When he had not returned people began to worry about his safety.
The 63 year old was the first to fly a solo around the world in a hot air balloon.
According to Maj. Cynthia S. Ryan of the Civil Air Patrol Fossett took off towards the south in search of dry lake beds for a good location to set a land speed record.
The search has been going on since about 6 p.m. mountain time.
